The Wreck
On January 22, 2011 Shelley was driving home from her shift at the hospital. It was an icy day. When she saw a car wreck on the side of the road with a police car there but no medical personnel she stopped to see if she could help. When the officer waved her on my mom was pulling back onto the highway and a semi truck, who was speeding slid on the ice and rear ended her.
Complications from the Wreck
Since then she has been dealing with complications similar to a stroke; difficulties walking, short term and long term memory loss, diminished ability to concentrate on any task, etc. She is in physical pain all the time. She easily forgets conversations, appointments and even the names for things. Writing is a difficult task. For the time being, she is unable to return to work. I know there are more things that she struggles with but those are the ones that come to mind.
Shelley's Treatment
The police officer who responded to this accident claimed no fault. My mom's job let her go and she lost her health and life insurance benefits despite the fact that she shouldn't have. After over two years of being improperly treated her lawyer found an opening at a traumatic brain injury rehabilitation center in Florida. Shelley is currently undergoing physical and cognitive therapy as well as seeing a psychologist on a regular basis (this is normal procedure for someone who has sustained an injury like hers). The people at the rehab center believe that she can fully recover from her accident.
How long will she be at the rehab center?
There isn't a definitive amount of time, although it has been suggested that she will be there for about 90 days. This facility will work with her until she is no longer progressing with her therapy and then she will continue some treatment at home. She has been there since the day before Thanksgiving.
Shelley loves getting mail. If you would like her address, email or Facebook me and I will get it to you.
