When my mom got in her car accident in January of 2011 Gabe (my husband) and I were living in Provo, UT going to school and working. We were unable to visit her until the semester was over and when we did go to visit it was both humbling and heart breaking to see my mom. No one had really explained the full extent to which my mom was injured and so when we showed up to a woman who could barely walk, had to wear dark sunglasses due to light sensitivity and was exhausted so easily it was a bit of a shock.
It was also saddening to see how the general public sometimes treated her and in turn how that affected my mom's self worth. The thing she was most self conscious about was the way she walked, with her right foot dragging beside her as she used a cane or walker for support. In an effort to help lighten the mood behind everything Gabe coined the term "Shelley shuffle" saying it would be the next big dance move.
And that is how we have tried to approach this entire ordeal, with a sense of humor and love.
